VOYAGE (VWAYAJ)

Voyage is a collection of painted work tracing Carmelle Beaugelin Caldwell's matrilineal physical and spiritual migration journeys across centuries — from the transatlantic slave trade, to her mother's passage from her native southern Haitian coast to the Afro-Latin enclaves of Puerto Rico, to a community of first-generation Americans in South Florida. Drawing on family archives and the immigration documents of her late mother, Anitha, Carmelle's line work and visual lexicon of mythical figures and colors guide viewers through creation narratives reflecting questions of heritage and identity, inviting us all to consider the physical and spiritual inheritances that have brought each of us to this point in our shared history.

Created during Carmelle's 2025–2026 residency at the Overseas Ministries Study Center at Princeton Theological Seminary (OMSC@PTS), Voyage opened on April 30, 2026, marking the tenth anniversary of Anitha's passing. The work remains on view through September 20, 2026, at the Erdman Center at Princeton Theological Seminary, with planned openings at the historic Nassau Presbyterian Church in Downtown Princeton (Fall 2026) and Coop Gallery in Nashville, TN (Spring 2027).
